The Rector of UNIPV in Prince Charles’s task-force for sustainable healthcare

The University of Pavia – the only Italian institution present – takes part in “The Sustainable Markets Initiative” launched by His Royal Highness Charles of England Prince of Wales, joining the Health Systems Taskforce promoted by the CEO of AstraZeneca . The task force brings together global representatives of the public and private health sector, international institutions and research bodies, with the aim of promoting sustainable and zero-impact health care.

On Wednesday 3rd November 2021 the Rector of the University of Pavia, Francesco Svelto, attended the first meeting of the group in Glasgow – as part of COP26, the United Nations conference on climate change – together with the leaders of AstraZeneca, GSK, Merck KGaA, Roche, Samsung Biologics, Sanofi, Novo Nordisk, World Health Organization, Unicef, NHS England, Sustainable Healthcare Coalition, Health and Global Policy Institute, of the Karolinska Institutet.

Three lines of action have been outlined: digital health, supply chains, patient care paths.

Thanks to the use of innovative technologies and artificial intelligence, the rethinking of supply chains, the identification of treatments that place the patient at the center, as well as the adoption of specific training actions and the measurement of environmental impact, the group intends contribute to the decarbonisation of the global health system.

Francesco Svelto declared: “Our involvement in the Health Systems Task-force of the Sustainable Markets Initiative confirms our commitment to environmental sustainability, people’s health and well-being. We will make our contribution through training, research and healthcare that puts the patient at the center”.
